Watching Grass Grow 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

I used to think that watching grass grow was pretty boring, but in recent years I have discovered it is scary as it grows so fast in the garden I started nearly 7 years ago that it can block a path in a week.

Having a body which doesn’t like bending much makes it worse, but there are some flowers which can usually show their heads from time to time makes it worth watching for them if the weeds allow.

Watching Grass Grow 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

Winter has arrived with some rain, and so the grass is growing a lot more quickly than I would like!

Soon it will be flowering and dropping seeds for next years weed fest!

At least today is starting with fine weather, so I guess I might get a chance to pull some weeds!

Watching Grass Grow 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

This project file was started one day when I was uninspired and bored stiff.

It was the sort of day when you would like to sit around and watch grass grow if it was nice outside. It wasn’t a nice day so I played with some grass inside, and it grew faster than the stuff outside but I didn’t have to pull it up.

The ones around the outside of the second design were the first generation of weeds as they were before I added a central flower. Now that I have opened up the project file again ...

Watching Grass Grow 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

I posted a couple of designs from this project file early this week, and since then have spent time avoiding the sun by playing in virtual dirt, and boy, have the weeds grown.

(Inside and out unfortunately!)

But there is hope!

A couple of the flowering plants I introduced to the garden grow like weeds, and there are some pretty flowers out there, as well as in here. A lot less backbreaking job to add flowers to a virtual garden though, and my hands don’t get dirty..

Watching Grass Grow 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

I got all excited about the possibilities of these designs, then had to spend time in the garden trying to remove weeds which were, and still are, almost winning the war against the flowers, bulbs and shrubs.

This morning I checked the weeds in the garden and thought it might be more fun to play with the weeds in Electric Quilt, and found the virtual borders were doing fine!

I wonder what some fertilizer will do to the volume of weeds here compared to the growth outside? Will they get thicker?

Watching Grass Grow 1, 2, 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Pretty ordinary, but has possibilities.

Improvement, but would like to see some diagonal lines … which means back to the drawing board. Will need some corners too.

Big improvement, but needs some straight borders.

Mmmm! These weeds are growing more quickly than the ones in the garden!

Next they will be flowering and dropping seeds.

I am planning to start a new series of virtual designs each month, starting with a sampler, or samplers featuring the variety of blocks to be used in the series. I have many unused block collections which are being sorted, so hopefully I will be able ...

Watching Grass Grow from Virtual Quilter

When I draw a new design, or start playing with a block from the Electric Quilt library, I keep asking myself a lot of questions, and they all start with the words “What if.”

What if I make it a bit wider?

Or longer?

Or a bit of both to change the scale with other pieces?

Then when I add colour comes another lot of questions.

What if that bit is darker?

What if that bit is lighter?

What if I change one colour completely?

When I get a reasonable collection of variations together, I put together a sampler quilt ...
